Newland
- The Ostrich Inn
This 14th century Inn is home to commonplace poltergeist activity. A former
landlord and his wife murdered up to 60 wealthy
guests in the "Blue Room" suite. Get this: a lever would be pulled and the bed
would tilt, hurling the unsuspecting patron into a vat of boiling liquid in the
"brewing room" below. The couple would then take the boiled bodies and dump them
in the river, no double snagging any belongings they had brought with them.
Electrical anomalies, lights flipping on and off, shutters slamming open and
shut, wandering apparitions, including a woman in full Victorian dress, are
among the frequently reported activity here.![]()
Nottinghamshire
- Southwell - Saracen's Head Hotel ![]()
Dating back to the 1400's, this hotel was the place King Charles
I spent his last night of freedom, thus room #1 (where he stayed) is plagued by
icy cold spots, balls of light that flitter about, and a disheartening air of
"restlessness". Perhaps it's because he was beheaded shortly after his stay...
Lord Byron is said to haunt the laundry room, and the restaurant is haunted by a
girl in 19th century waitress garb.![]()
Oxfordshire -
The Holt Hotel 50 miles west of London
The 15th century massive stone structure that is the Holt
Hotel has a bloody past.
Murders, executions and all the horror of a darker time contribute to the
paranormal unrest here.
Former resident Claude Duvalle was a sadistic murderer - a highwayman from
France. He
lived in hotels to be around rich men and beautiful women. A womanizer in his
own right, he was
popular with the women. When the hotel's proprietors realized they were housing
a thief, the
authorities at the time drug him to London, where he was hung.
Shortly after Claude was hung, the
proprietors of the Holt were found bludgeoned to death
in their bed. Locals blamed the dead man. The crime was never solved.
Claude, among other restless souls, have been
seen by patrons of the hotel to this day,
floating about in the guest rooms, and the pub. Glasses fly from shelves. Cold
spots are felt.
Choking sounds are heard.

Surrey
- Frimley Hall Hotel south of London
Out of a picture postcard, the Frimley Hall Hotel juts from
the English countryside right out of
a Hans Christian Andersen story. Ivy covered and overlooking lush, green
countryside, it has
beautiful stained glass windows, wooden carved moldings and a massive wooden
staircase.
The spirit of a nanny is said to still haunt
the house. One day when the nanny was
distracted by the baby she was watching, the toddler that was under her care
fell to her death
down the grand staircase. The girl was sent away after the fatal accident and
was said to have
never recovered from the event, always feeling responsible.
Today, the nanny, long dead, has returned to
work. Late in the evenings, guests hear
doors opening and feel cold spots. A female form at the top of the stairs is
seen by some. A
chair on the landing moves by itself. One man had his clothes folded for him
inexplicably one
night.

Rye, East
Sussex - The Mermaid Inn
This place rocks! Paranormally speaking - that is...
Room 16 houses a phantom duel that has been witnessed by visitors - 2
archaically dressed men in knickers and floofy fancy lad attire have apparently
awoken the unsuspecting visitors to this room. The winner of the duel tosses the
loser into the floor, down which used to be a flight of stairs that led into the
now barroom. One day the bottles in the bar all came crashing to the floor all
at once. and the barkeep was so freaked out that he quit.
Room 19 is reportedly haunted by a similarly dressed older gentleman, and
Room 5 is haunted by a lady in white - a maid who was reportedly killed
by smugglers. Another lady in white haunts room
1, sitting in the chair by the fireplace. Visitors who have left their clothes
in that chair find them wet in the morning. (The lady in white is said to be a
murdered 17th century woman who was killed by her smuggler boyfriend.) Room
10 is haunted by the apparition of a man lying on the floor, cut in half by
the bathroom wall. Room 17 is afflicted with cold spots and a malevolent
spirit, as well as a chair that rocks itself.

Essex - Borley
- The Borley Rectory
Touted as "The Most Haunted Place in England", indeed the Borley Rectory is mentioned in countless publications on the supernatural worldwide. Built on the ruins of a Benedictine monastery, some locals attribute some of it's unusual occurrences to an old story of a monk who fell in love with a nun from a neighboring town. When the two stole away together, they - along with a driver- were caught. The monk was hung, the driver beheaded, and the nun was entombed alive. All three have been said to wander about the property still: There is a path on the grounds that has been nicknamed "The Nun's Walk", as she is most often seen there. She was said to appear every July 28th - until, that is, curious ghost hunters gathered in such numbers that by the early 1990's the phenomena had ceased. A "Headless Coach Driver" has been seen at the helm of an antique carriage (there is no mention of a ghostly horse, however...). The monk is most often spotted within the rectory.
In the 1930's then famed ghost "debunker" Harry Price came to the rectory to try to find any logical reason behind the hauntings. When he arrived, a flurry of poltergeist activity ensued. Objects rained from the ceilings and shot across rooms. He held séances, and claimed to have contacted the spirit of former rector Harry Bull.
In following years, spurred by articles written of the occurrences in the London Daily News , thrill seekers overran the property. It was abandoned for a time, but when a relative of the late Harry Bull moved there to become the new rector, more odd things were reported - including prayers for atonement that were scrawled onto the walls by unseen hands. Also, mysterious fires began to occur.
In 1939 the home was gutted by fire. Upon excavation of the cellar, the bones of a young woman were found, along with artifacts consistent with adornments that nuns would have used. Later, in the 1950's, evidence that a convent existed on the site was found by archaeologists. Finally in 1944 the remains of the building were torn down, at which point a photographer from Life Magazine caught a photo of a brick that appeared to levitate in mid air.
Today an orchard stands where the rectory was; the nun is still making appearances, according to witnesses.

then turn North toward Sudbury. Just before Sudbury, you will cross
the Stour river. Go West along the river until you reach Borley.![]()

London - The
Tower of London
Arguably the source of the most ghost stories to come from one building, I can't
even begin to list the number of ghosts that are claimed to haunt this 1000 year
old building. Celebrity ghosts include: Anne Boleyn ( buried in the
chapel of St Peter ad Vincula,), Edward V and his
brother Richard the Duke of York (murdered in childhood by orders given by their
uncle, Richard III - immortalized in the Shakespeare play), Sir Walter Raleigh
(once imprisoned there as well), Lady Salisbury, (who tried to flee from her
executioner and was beaten down while in flight with the executioner's axe), and
Lady Jane Grey (queen for just nine days). The long and twisted history of
(often false) imprisonment and bloody executions by the unforgiving edge of a
big wicked axe could no doubt produce quite a cast of really pissed off spirits,
one might theorize. I recall that one program I watched claimed that the
ghost of a lion (a gift to the King's menagerie) even roams the tower.![]()

West Boldon,
England - Wheatsheaf Pub![]()
There
were a few of the standard hauntings going on here - chairs that move
themselves, an otherworldly shove on the back here and there - even a phantom
child's handprint in a glob of jelly one strange afternoon. As these places
often attract ghost hunters and psychics, a psychic medium decided to troll the
place for spirits in 2004. If you read this site much, then you probably know
that I don't have a whole lot of, er... "faith", in most people who claim they
are "psychic". (I think it's probably because of my strong roots in science...)
When this particular medium said that, among 37 others, there was a spirit of a
nine year old girl crying out to her - I would've been the first to roll my eyes
and say.. "whaaaaaatevaahh". She said the girl was named Jessica Hargreaves and
that she was raped, murdered, and buried behind the mortar of the pub's
fireplace in 1908. She even claimed to have spoken with the dead baby rapist who
killed her.
Then something happened that even gave Jaded Old Me the willies (at least
slightly). The pub owners decided to tear open the wall where the fireplace used
to be, and within it they found a chunk of human hair, some girl's clothing and
a rotting heel of a girl's shoe. St Nicholas Road
