I won't pretend that I know a lot about Arizona.  The week I visited there it rained to the point of flooding, and was the worst cold snap they had seen in 10 years.  Therefore, I decided not to go back to the land of "no bad weather" thus far.  My husband got his stomach pumped there in one of their fine emergency rooms, after a night of college partying many years ago.  Oh, and I have a good friend who bartends there.  Is that monotonous enough for ya?  Read on for more exciting stories than what I have to offer...

Cottonwood - Little Daisy Hotel
- The ghost of a murdered prostitute is seen hanging around here, which used to be the red light district back in miner's days. The town boasts a lot of supernatural occurrences; there's even a "haunted hamburger stand". 25 miles from Prescott on Hwy 89A

Prescott - Hassayampa Inn
In 1927 a newlywed couple checked into a room here. The dirty bum husband took off, saying he had to "buy a pack of cigarettes", never to return. After 3 days, the distraught bride, "Faith", hung herself in the room. Ever since, Faith has been spotted in different spots all over the hotel, sometimes holding flowers, sometimes in a pink gown, sometimes crying. She likes to turn all the burners off at once in the kitchen

Phoenix - The Hermosa Inn

Phoenix- Hotel San Carlos
In 1928, a forlorn woman in an evening gown named Leone threw herself from the roof to her death.
People seem to hear odd noises and see her floating outside the windows. They also hear children laughing, which could be contributed to the fact it was built on an old schoolhouse.

Prescott - Hotel Vendome
A woman who owned the hotel, but lost it after financial problems, was allowed to stay in room 16 for free by the new owner, along with her cat. She, and the cat, apparently starved to death in the room during the great depression.  Another story says that she had tuberculosis, and her husband deserted her there - said he was "going to get her medicine".  Distraught when he didn't return, she starved herself (and her cat) to death. She and her cat are seen once in awhile in the hotel.

Flagstaff - Monte Vista Hotel
A former celebrity hot spot (in Flagstaff?), The hotel, along with the attached bar, is haunted by some apparitions. A phantom bellboy who knocks on doors, a woman who walks outside of the Zane Grey suite, and a man who paces and clears his throat in a particular room.

Jerome - Inn at Jerome
This Victorian era Inn is located in the spectral hotspot of the former copper mining town of Jerome, near Sedona. When the neighbor caught them, he killed them both in the house, went on a killing spree of unwitting townsfolk, then killed himself. Another boarding house resident named Nat Anderson had his head blown off at the top of the staircase in 1920. His killer was never brought to justice. Poltergeist activity here includes gunshot noises, footsteps, and heavy doors slamming shut. Owner Dennis Schranz claims that there are five spirits still hanging about, and one of them is malevolent. 26 Souls Rd (520) 432-4286

Several workers have claimed to have seen a headless figure, thin and wearing a black suit, in the basement. A glowing figure who passes through the wall was also seen in the basement, and the prank playing ghost of a Native American child was also reported here. 1046 G Avenue, Douglas, AZ (520) 364-4481

They returned several times before Lombard was killed in a plane crash over a desolate area of Nevada. Of course, Lombard and Gable are said to haunt, especially in #15. Also, in the Theater Room Museum, a chambermaid's ghost is said to leave imprints on dusty bed linens in the room. Tombstone Spirit Walks

Jerome - Haunted Ghost Town
This formerly glorious old west Copper mining town near Sedona is home, locals say, to several ghosts from the hardscrabble days of soiled doves and hard living miners. The community center plays host to the ghost of a prostitute, the Episcopal church has had sightings of a misty white apparition, and a building next to the hospital, the "Old Company Clinic" has reports of a phenomena rarely reported even in the most "haunted" of cities: a spectral re-enactment. Basically, the poor victims of an influenza epidemic in 1917 show up once again to perform a sort of "otherworldly performance" for whoever is lucky (or unlucky, depending on the person) enough to be watching. Other such unusual scenes have been reported at the Beauregard-Keys House in New Orleans and in historical Gettysburg, PA. (also see "The Inn at Jerome")

Tombstone - Birdcage Theater  70 mi SE of Tucson

Birdcage Theater is located in legendary Tombstone.  Known for it's bloody gunfights and bawdy honky tonks during expansion, Tombstone is a tourist destination that is treasured by lovers of cowboy tales of the "Old West".  A mining town, the money that was earned here was spent, not unlike any other mining town of the era, at the local bordello: The Birdcage Theater.  Today it is said to be haunted by the ghost of a prostitute, Margarita. The most popular of the prostitutes at the time was a woman called "Gold Dollar", who was being edged out by the newcomer, Margarita.  When Gold Dollar caught Margarita perched on the lap of her favorite boyfriend, she kept it real.  She pulled out a knife and proceeded to cut her heart out - right in the middle of the saloon.  Dressed in 19th century finery, Margarita is spotted, a fleeting image, by customers to this day. The smell of charred flesh, the sounds of screams, and a feeling of illness come over those who hike in the area.

A little girl named Angeline who died when traveling west with her family in the 19th century is said to leave handprints on car windows, and has been spotted in her Victorian era clothing in the city.
