Convenience Store Mole Sauce (Moe-Lay Sauce)
Traditional mole sauce takes all day to make with countless ingredients
including seeds and nuts that are ground smooth and simmered all day. This one
takes you to the 7-11 for your ingredients. Don't be scared of the chocolate, the
finished sauce won't taste of chocolate.
INGREDIENTS (Nutrition)
* 2 teaspoons vegetable oil
* 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
* 1 Hershey's Special Dark bar (1.55 oz, the smaller size) OR 1/4 c semisweet
chocolate chips
* 1 teaspoon ground cumin
* 1 teaspoon dried cilantro
* 1/8 tablespoon dried minced garlic
* 1 (10.75 ounce) can condensed tomato soup
* 1 (4 ounce) can diced green chile peppers
* 1/4 c creamy peanut butter
* 1 peeled banana, mashed
* chicken broth or water to thin
DIRECTIONS
1. Heat the oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat, and cook the onion until
tender. Mix in cumin, cilantro, garlic, and the crumbled up chocolate bar. Stir in the tomato
soup and green chile peppers. Add peanut butter, banana, and enough broth to
make it the consistency of thick gravy. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low,
cover, and simmer 10 minutes. Thin with more broth is needed to make gravy like
thickness. Good over chicken or pork. Better if it simmers longer and if it sits
awhile before eating.
(HINT: If you want to make the sauce a little more complex and flavorful, the addition of 1/4 c raisins and/or 1/4 c sunflower or sesame seeds before simmering will make it nicer - except you need to blend the sauce in a blender or food processor before serving to make it smooth.)
