"Ocean-Born" Mary Wallace is this berg's claim to fame. When her parents were aboard a ship from Europe immigrating to the US, pirates overtook the vessel. The "head buccaneer", for lack of a better term, promised not to harm the passengers if Mary's mom, heavy with child, named the baby after his mother. She did, and the child's story was spread around the area. Mary's son lived in this house, though some sources say the home was built by the pirate whose mother she was named after. Mary was said to have buried the pirate under the hearth stone in the home after he was stabbed to death. A lot of the stories surrounding the house were reportedly embellished if not fabricated by former owners to booster ticket sales to the home when it offered daily tours. Among them, true or not, are: a 6 feet tall red, red haired, fiery-eyed Mary walks about and looks from the windows at night; a ghostly Mary throws an unknown object down the well in the yard; Mary has been seen repairing the garage during a fierce storm, and was reported to have somehow extinguished a fire that was started by a dropped kerosene lamp - all after she died, of course, and the best of all: she still supposedly visits this house every Halloween in a horse drawn coach. I don't know if this is the same building, but there is a B & B of the name at this website.
